As a part of the reparations legislation passed by Chicago City Council in 2015, the history of police torture by the Chicago Police Department was added to the Chicago Public Schools’ eighth and tenth grade curricula. Below are the official “Reparations Won” lesson plans adopted by CPS in 2017, as well as a teacher’s guide designed by Project NIA in 2015.

As a part of the organizing effort for reparations, the Teach Burge site provides resources for educators in and out of the classroom. The site includes multimedia resources, a lesson plan for an hour long “Burge Police Torture 101” workshop, a film discussion guide for The End of the Nightstick, and a copy of the syllabus for Dr. Susan Gzesh’s human rights course at the University of Chicago that focused on a set of Burge torture cases.
